Panda -monium!

Well who would have guessed it? Out of all the zoos in the all the world, China has decided that its keen for Edinburgh Zoo to have a couple of pandas to encourage a breeding programme. A touch of the Orient comes to EH12! Of course, I wouldn't want to spoil the fairy tale by mentioning the fact that the Zoo has paid a million pounds for the privilege! They are going to have to sell a heck of a lot of stuffed giraffes from the gift shop to cover that little "unexpected expense".

So, what can our pandas look forward to as they start their new life in Auld Reekie. Well, I just hope that they get on well together because they ain't going to have much company from other animals at the zoo. There are the penguins of course which are great but you can see even they are getting fed up of the daily parade which is undoubtedly the highlight of a trip to the zoo. You can just see the look in their eyes as they are marshalled into a line just before 3 o'clock to waddle along a concrete path towards the ice cream kiosk and back again, "David Attenborough would never expect us to do this!"

Apart from the penguins, the choice of animals is a bit sparse - some deer with funny horns, a few (really fed up looking) monkeys and if you make the climb to the very top of the zoo (please do not undertake this climb if you are fitted with a pace maker or are wearing shoes with heels!!) there are a couple of zebra and that is pretty much your lot.

So welcome, pandas and I for one am off to Dobbies to stock up on bamboo plants to sell to the zoo.
